Conditions on Death Row

Death Row cells are approximately 6’ by 9’.  An average-size person can stand in the middle of the cell, stretch out his or her arms, and touch both walls.  Death Row cells are brutally hot in summer and bitterly cold in winter.  Most prisoners are not allowed out of their cells for more than three or four hours per week for quick showers and time in a paved enclosure called an “exercise yard.”  In such conditions prisoners easily become overwhelmed by feelings of isolation and hopelessness.
